Frequently Asked Questions
I understand that you might have questions before booking a massage, especially if it's your first time or you're trying a new type of therapy. This section covers some of the most common questions to help you feel prepared and at ease. If you don't see your question answered here, please don't hesitate to get in touch via the contact form - I'll be happy to assist.
Preparation and Expectations
What should I wear during the massage?
Sports Massage
You're welcome to wear what feels comfortable, though less clothing typically allows for smoother movements and better therapeutic effectiveness. Shorts or underwear (without a bra, if applicable) are recommended, but remaining fully clothed is also fine. Privacy and comfort will always be ensured through careful draping.
Lomi Lomi Massage
It is generally best to receive the massage without clothing, as the techniques involve flowing, continuous movements across the full body. Draping will always be used to respect your modesty.
Please feel free to discuss any preferences or concerns - your comfort is my top priority.
What should I expect during my first massage?
When you arrive, you'll start by filling out a short intake form. This helps me understand your history, any past injuries, and the areas you'd like to focus on. We'll then have a quick chat to go over your needs and preferences. After that, you'll have privacy to undress to your comfort level and lie on the massage table, where you'll be covered with a sheet. During the session, I'll only uncover the area I'm working on to make sure you feel at ease throughout.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the massage?
There's no special preparation required, but a few simple steps can help you make the most of your session. Try to drink plenty of water beforehand to stay hydrated, and avoid heavy meals right before your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy changing. Most importantly, just come as you are and be ready to unwind!
Health and Safety
Are there any conditions that would make a massage unsafe for me?
Massage is generally safe and beneficial, but there are some situations where extra care is needed. If you're feeling unwell, it's best to rebook your appointment for when you're fully recovered. For specific conditions like recent injuries, wounds, or areas of swelling or bruising, I'll simply avoid working on those areas to ensure your safety. If you have any medical concerns such as blood clots, heart conditions, or recent surgery, it's wise to speak to your doctor first. Your wellbeing is my priority, and I'm happy to discuss any concerns you might have.
What precautions are in place to ensure hygiene?
All linens, including sheets and towels, are freshly washed for every client. The massage table and equipment are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised after each session. I also follow strict handwashing protocols before and after every treatment.
Can I have a massage if I'm pregnant or recovering from an injury?
I'm not yet qualified to provide massage therapy for pregnant clients, so it's best to seek a specialist trained in prenatal massage. If you're recovering from an injury, massage can often be helpful, but it depends on the type and stage of the injury. I'll avoid working directly on the affected area if necessary, and if you're unsure, it's always a good idea to consult your doctor beforehand.
Comfort and Privacy
Will all areas of my body be worked on?
No, only the areas discussed and agreed upon before the session will be addressed. Massage is always tailored to your preferences and needs, so you can let me know which areas you'd like to focus on and which you'd prefer to avoid. Your wellbeing is my main concern, so strict draping will be in place to ensure that only the area being worked on is uncovered.
What if I'm self-conscious about my body?
It's completely natural to feel self-conscious, but please know that my focus is on helping you feel relaxed and comfortable. Massage therapy is a judgement-free space, and everybody is treated with care and respect. Strict draping is always used to ensure your privacy, and you can choose to keep clothing on if it makes you feel more at ease. My goal is to create a space where you can fully relax and enjoy the benefits of your session.
What if I don't like firm pressure or if the massage is painful?
Your comfort is paramount, so please don't hesitate to let me know if the pressure feels too firm or if anything doesn't feel quite right. Massage is meant to be a relaxing and beneficial experience, and adjustments can always be made during the session to suit your preferences. Open communication ensures that the pressure is just right for you, so you can fully enjoy the treatment.
Logistics and Practicalities
How long does a massage last?
Sports and remedial massages typically last around an hour, while Lomi lomi sessions may extend up to two hours. If you have time constraints and need to leave at a specific time, just let me know before we begin, and I'll ensure your session is adjusted accordingly.
How much does a massage cost?
Massage sessions are currently free of charge, giving you a chance to enjoy the benefits while helping me refine my skills.
Do I need to book in advance?
Currently, bookings are only made available for the following two weeks, but will be extended in future. All open appointments are listed on the booking system, so if you see a time that works for you, feel free to book it right away.
During the Massage
Can I talk during the massage, or should I stay silent?
That's entirely up to you! Some people enjoy chatting during their massage, while others prefer to stay quiet and focus on relaxing. There's no right or wrong way. If I need to check in about pressure or your comfort, I'll ask, but otherwise, the atmosphere is yours to enjoy however you like.
What if I fall asleep?
Falling asleep during a massage is perfectly normal and even a compliment - it means you're relaxed and at ease. There's no need to feel embarrassed if it happens. I'll continue the session as planned, and you can enjoy the benefits of a deeply restful experience.
Will the massage be painful?
Massage is not meant to be painful, but certain techniques may cause some discomfort as tight muscles are released. This discomfort is often described as a 'good pain' - a satisfying sensation that feels productive rather than unpleasant. Please let me know if anything feels too intense, and I'll adjust the pressure accordingly. A massage should be both effective and enjoyable!
Post-Massage
What should I do after the massage?
After your massage, it's generally a good idea to take it easy and let your body unwind. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as this helps support your body's natural recovery processes. Avoid heavy meals or strenuous physical activity for a few hours unless we've specifically tailored your session to prepare you for activity. Above all, listen to your body and enjoy the sense of relaxation and wellbeing that follows.
Will I feel sore after the massage?
While it's uncommon, you may occasionally feel a little sore after a massage, especially if deeper techniques were used to target tight or knotted muscles. When it does happen, the soreness is usually mild and subsides within 24-48 hours. Staying hydrated, taking a warm bath, or doing gentle stretches can help ease any discomfort. If the soreness feels unusual or lasts longer than expected, let me know so we can adjust future treatments to better suit your needs.
